King, Shirley Louise
Shirley Louise King, 79, died Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2012, at Mercy Iowa City. A Celebration of Life service will be held 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 10, at Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Brethren Cemetery near South English.
Shirley Louise King was born Aug. 26, 1932, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the daughter of John and Lottie (Cross) Boedeker. She grew up in Cedar Rapids and married Norman F. King there on Oct. 29, 1950. They made their home in the North English community and in 1980 moved to Wellman.
While in Wellman, Shirley worked 19 years in the kitchen at Mid-Prairie High School. She was a member of the English River Church of the Brethren. She loved being surrounded by her family, listening to music, cooking and Kentucky Fried Chicken. After Norman's in death in January 2004, she moved to North English.
Shirley is survived by five children, Diane (Dennis) Curley of Oxford Junction, Barbara (Darrell) Jones of Norman, Okla., Susan King of Oskaloosa, Patty (Brian) Fisher of South English and Bill (Donna) King of Williamsburg; 10 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and two sisters, Nadine Brady of Anamosa and Mary Ann Gates of Central City.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband in January 2004.
A memorial fund has been established for Mercy Hospice and the North English QRS.
