KIMBERLY GIBNEY
Maynard
Kimberly Ann Gibney, 57, of Olathe, Kan., passed away Dec. 28, 2014, with her loving family surrounding her.
Kim was born Oct. 2, 1957, in Houston, Texas, to
J'Andrea and Dean Gibney, their first-born child. She graduated from West Central High School in Maynard, Iowa, in 1976. Kim enjoyed an accomplished athletic career at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, where she lettered in volleyball, basketball and softball each of her four years. She was such a highly regarded student-athlete, she would enter the Coe College Hall of Fame in 1996. She graduated with a degree in education in 1980 and began a long and fulfilling teaching career in the Blue Valley School District in 1986.
In 1997, Kim received her master's degree in education through Webster University. Kim touched the lives of many biology students, volleyball players and softball student-athletes in her 27 years of teaching and coaching.
She was a sports enthusiast, loyally following KU men's basketball, KU volleyball and UMKC volleyball.
Kim loved the outdoors: camping, hiking, gardening, or walking her beloved Yorkshire terriers around the neighborhood. She traveled every summer and was fascinated by natural wonders such as Alaska's glaciers and Yellowstone's geysers.
Kim's other great passion was her family – she loved to shower her nieces and nephews with candy, toys, sports jerseys and holiday accessories.
Kim is survived by her mother, J'Andrea of Maynard; her brother, Kevin and his wife, Patty, of Charles City; her sister, Kathie Beacom and her husband, Kelly, of Maynard; her sister, Kristie Hooper and her husband, Eric, of Puyallup, Wash.; her sister, Kara McRoberts and her husband, Chad, of Chicago; along with nieces, April Mattson and her husband, Ray, Ashley Rueber, Kylie and Cortney Deneen and Mia McRoberts; and nephews, Austin Rueber, Gibson and Roby Hooper and Jack McRoberts. She also is survived by Christi Posey, her loving and devoted partner of 23 years.
Kim's life was about giving – donations in Kim's honor may be made to the following organizations: Humane Society of Greater Kansas City, 5445 Parallel Pkwy, Kansas City, KS 66104; the Arthritis Foundation, 1900 W. 75th St., Suite 200, Prairie Village, KS 66208 (please indicate "Rheumatoid"); or to the Kim Gibney Outstanding Science Student Scholarship Fund, with donations made out to the Blue Valley Education Foundation, (note "Kim Gibney Scholarship" on the memo line), BVEF, 15020 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, KS 66223.
Services were held at Grace United Methodist Church in Olathe, Kan., on Friday, Jan. 2.
