Kilburg, Candace A.
Candace A. Kilburg, 67, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Sunday, June 9, 2013, at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids. Visitation will be at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories Wednesday, June 12, between 4 and 8 p.m. where a vigil will be held at 4 p.m. and from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the church. Funeral mass will be celebrated at All Saints Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, on Thursday at 9:30 a.m. with the Rev. John Flaherty officiating, with a luncheon immediately following the service. Private interment will follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Bellevue, Iowa.
Candace was born Jan. 19, 1946, in Madison, Wis.
She is survived by her husband, Paul Kilburg of Cedar Rapids; and her son, Nick (Desiree) Kilburg of Iowa City.
Also surviving are her siblings, Sandra (Paul) Roling, Janet (John) Callaghan, Daniel (Rose) Knapp and Robinn (Jeff) Bardell; and numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Nelson Knapp and Melba Gilbertson Knapp.
She graduated from Marquette High School in Bellevue, Iowa. She received her Bachelor's degree in Education from the University of Wisconsin in Platteville and her M.Ed. from Southwestern Oklahoma State in Weatherford, Okla. She taught math and science, spending the majority of her career at Center Point-Urbana Grade School. She was instrumental in implementing computer programs in area schools. She founded the Hands On Science program at Grant Wood Area Education Agency. She initiated the math and science camp for 5th and 6th graders at Camp Wapsie in Central City and was Iowa's Science Teacher of the Year in 1988, and a finalist for National Teacher of the Year. She always considered herself first and foremost a teacher.
Her family would like to thank Hallmar and the staff at Mercy Medical Center and Mercy Hospice and Palliative Care for their care and compassion.
A memorial fund has been established in her name.
