Kilbourn, Donald R.
Donald R. Kilbourn, 94, of Living Center West, died there Saturday, Oct. 6, 2012. Memorial services: 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 26, at Cedar Memories Park Chapel of Memories, where friends may call after 10 a.m. Friday. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Donald Ross Kilbourn was born June 13, 1918, in Macy, Neb., to Floyd and Pearl Kilbourn. Don was the youngest of four children, two sisters and a brother, and was raised in Macy on the Omaha Indian Reservation. He was involved in sports and followed his beloved Cornhuskers faithfully. Upon graduation from high school, Don became a meat cutter, working in several markets in Walthill, Sioux City and Omaha.
Don was united in marriage in 1940 to Cora Irene Rose. They were together until her death in 1957. One son, Larry, was born to this union.
In 1979, Don moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where his eldest sister, Lucille, and her husband, Ned Fuller, resided. Don began working at Nelson's Meat Market shortly thereafter, remaining there for nearly 30 years. Don treasured his job and the many friendships formed while at Nelson's. Don's boss, Mark Martin, was like a second son to Don. Close friends Terry, John Watson and many fellow workers and customers were like family to Don. He attended at least one Nebraska football game every year for 30 years, including one national championship game at the 1994 Orange Bowl in Miami, Fla.
Special niece, Kim Newcomb (husband Steve and son Kyle) provided room in their home and lives for many years.
Don is survived by his son, Larry, and daughter-in-law, Judy; two granddaughters, Stacey (Mike) Bartz and Michele (Hal) Steffen; and three grandchildren, Ryan, Briana and Allison Bartz.
A special thank you to the terrific staff and doctors at Living Center West, especially long time caregiver, Brandi. The family wishes to thank everyone for their kindness and friendship to Don over all of the years.
