KEVIN KEITH COOLING
Cedar Rapids
Kevin Keith Cooling, 58, of Cedar Rapids, went to be with the Lord on Friday, Dec. 10, 2021, surrounded by his close family.
Funeral Mass: 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick Catholic Church by the Rev. Greg Bahl. Burial: St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family at the church on Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m., and after 9 a.m. on Wednesday, prior to the mass. Teahen Funeral Home is serving the family.
Kevin was born June 5, 1963, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Lloyd and Lois Cooling. He grew up in Ely, surrounded by loving family and small town forever friends. He graduated from Prairie High School in 1981, where he excelled at basketball and baseball. He later received an Associate's degree from Kirkwood Community College. Right out of high school Kevin worked for his uncle Allen at Tjelmeland Construction. Next he worked for the Norand Co. in Cedar Rapids and a then for a short while at Square D. He later achieved his dream of owning his own business, Crown Trophy, where he enjoyed meeting and talking with so many people in the community. In the past few years Kevin worked for Metal Design Systems Inc. in Anamosa.
While working at Norand he met the love of his life, Sue (Drew) Cooling, and they were soon married at St. Patrick Church in Cedar Rapids in 1986. Kevin was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, where he served as a Eucharistic Minister for many years.
Kevin dearly loved being with his children and grandchildren, making every get together special for them and full of fun, whether going to sporting events, birthday parties or just visiting. He so enjoyed this time together and talked about it for weeks afterwards.
He loved woodworking with his dad in the garage and chatting with his mom in the house. He spent a lot of time in Ely, enjoying company on the deck, talking and laughing with the whole family. Kevin loved to joke and socialize with everyone he met, taking the time to listen and enjoy each conversation. He was very compassionate often putting others' before himself.
Some of his favorite times included grilling and cooking up new recipes for everyone to try, attending Hawkeye sporting events, watching his children and grandchildren's activities and summer vacations with the family to the lake house. He also treasured the annual fishing trip he took with his many close friends up to Canada.
Dad will be our angel in Heaven watching over and taking care of all of us.
He is survived by and will be dearly missed by his children, Nick (Cassie) Cooling and Chris (Becca) Cooling of Des Moines, and Lauren Cooling (Carter Ives) of Cedar Rapids. He has five precious grandsons, Carter, Corbin, Calvin, Miller and Hayes Cooling. He is also survived by his mother, Lois Cooling of Ely; his sisters, Jackie (Mark) Brown of Cedar Rapids and Kim Cooling of Ely; five brothers-in-law, Clark (Sandy) Drew of Vinton, Kevin (Terri) Drew, Craig (Kris), and Kurt (Tya) Drew, all of Cedar Rapids and Kelly (Jill) Drew of Deland, Fla.; sister-in-law, Beth (Gus) Hartauer of Carmel, Ind.; and so very many loving aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Waiting to welcome our dad into God's Kingdom is our beautiful mother and his beloved wife, Sue. He was also preceded in death by his father, Lloyd; in-laws, Walter and Mary Ellen Drew; grandparents, Bob and Marian Malatek, and Eldon and Julia Cooling; and a niece, Jennifer Drew.
Special thanks to Mercy Hospital and the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy for their tremendous care and affection for our dad.
