KEVIN M. HOOK
Riverside
Kevin M. Hook, 53, of Riverside, passed away Tuesday, April 12, 2016, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics of complications from esophageal cancer. Visitation will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Lensing Funeral Service in Iowa City. A memorial service will follow at 4 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mission of Hope, Safeplace Foundation or the Kevin Hook Memorial Fund for his children's education.
Kevin was born Oct. 16, 1962, in Marengo, Iowa, the son of Kenneth and Janice (McMillen) Hook. He graduated from Benton Community High School in 1981. Kevin was a union carpenter for 24 years with Local 308 in Cedar Rapids and 1260 in Iowa City. His touch can be found all over Iowa City, including his latest work on the University of Iowa Children's Hospital, as well as the University of Iowa art and music buildings.
In 1993, Kevin married Jo Hicks in Marion. Kevin and Jo were blessed with two boys, Casey, (19), and Mason Hook, (16). They later divorced but remained close friends working together to raise their children. In 2010, Kevin and Cyndi Kindred found each other and made a life together until his death. They enjoyed many activities together, but especially loved to watch Kevin's boys and Cyndi's grandchildren play sports.
Kevin was an all-around gifted athlete. He also loved watching sports and was an avid Hawkeye fan. Later in life, Kevin reaffirmed his faith. Kevin and Cyndi loved to "church hop," enjoying different worship styles. His love for God was apparent. When visiting D.C., his preference was to spend his time and money giving to the homeless rather than visiting the usual sites. He enjoyed volunteering time at Mission of Hope and Safeplace Foundation in Cedar Rapids.
Kevin is survived by parents, Kenneth and Janice Hook of Solon; Jo Hook and two sons, Casey (Daylee Jellison) and Mason Hook of Cedar Rapids; a sister, Lyn Dee (G. Patrick) Kealey of Iowa City, and their children, Alexis, Mikhail and Lilian; David (Jenner) Kealey and family of Davenport; Brendan Kealey and family of Iowa City; Colin (Angela) Kealey of Los Angeles, Calif.; Darby Kealey (Megan Galizia) of Los Angeles; Olivia Kealey of San Francisco, Calif.; and Maria Keale of Madison, Wis.; a brother, Christopher Hook of Solon; fiance, Cynthia Kindred of Riverside, and her children; Bill (Shannon) Kindred of Keota, and their children, Taylor, Cole and Billie; Chad Kindred of Keota, and his children, Chase and Carsin; and Joshua Kindred of Fredericksburg, Va.
