Kepford, Sherman
Sherman Kepford, 71, passed away Thursday, Jan. 6, 2011, after a courageous battle with cancer. A gathering of family and friends will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 10, at Fry Funeral Home, 220 East Sixth St., Tipton. There will be no other services.
Sherm was born July 5, 1939, in Des Moines, Iowa, the oldest son of Rex and Billie Kepford. He graduated from Tech High School and attended Grandview College in Des Moines. Sherm married Shirley Morgan on Sept. 3, 1961, at Staves Memorial Evangelical United Brethren Church, Des Moines. They had two children, Steve and Scott. Moving to Tipton, he owned his own business, K&K Bookkeeping, until he had to retire in 1995 due to health.
Sherm helped raise money for the show ring at the Tipton Fairgrounds while he was a member of the Jaycees. He was chairman of the fund drive. He volunteered for many years calling bingo at the senior center which he loved doing. He served on the ambulance service for eight years and the Tipton Fire Department for 25 years. He also was a past board member of the Tipton Public Library.
He had many hobbies: he was an avid reader, enjoyed wood working, playing tennis, baking and making candy. He had a collection of Sherlock Holmes and Charlie Chan movies that he would watch each evening.
Sherm is survived by his wife, Shirley; his two children, Scott (Lisa) and Steven (Marta); four grandchildren, Autumn, Drew, Bailey and Noah; one great-grandchild, Payton; his brother, Rex (Nancy); and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father.
He will be greatly missed by all who know and loved him.
A memorial fund has been established for the Tipton Fire Department.
We want to thank everyone for their help and the many letters, cards and prayers during this difficult time.
