KENNETH HOCHSTEDLER
Kalona
Kenneth D. "Kenny" Hochstedler passed away peacefully July 23, 2015, at Mercy Iowa City, surrounded by the love of his family, at the age of 80 years.
Kenny was born Feb. 3, 1935, the son of Emery R. and Ada (Miller) Hochstedler. On Nov. 24, 1957, he was united in marriage to Virginia Potter at Kalona Methodist Church. Virginia passed away in 2004. On July 14, 2012, Ken was united in marriage to Lana Reid at First Christian Church in Coralville.
Ken was the founder of Hochstedler Insurance Agency in Kalona and an upstanding member of the local business community. He led the agency for 43 years before retiring in 2004 and entrusting the business to his son, Kevin.
Farming and the outdoors were in his blood. He grew up on a farm, owned a farm and loved spending time outside. Ken was known to so many for his love of a "good pond," either in his yard in Kalona or on his land near Joetown. Ringing the bell and feeding the fish each day brought him so much joy.
He was an active member in many local organizations throughout his life, such as the Iowa Miniature Horse Association, Rotary, Masonic Lodge, VFW, Kalona Golf Course, Independent Insurance Association and more.
Nothing provided Kenny more joy than the activities of his grandchildren. He was the number one fan at many volleyball, soccer, 4-H, band and chorus events.
Ken is survived by his wife, Lana, of Kalona; two sons, Randy (Linda) Hochstedler of Marion and Kevin (Beth) Hochstedler of Iowa City; a daughter, Michelle (Ann Camblin) Bates of Coralville; four stepchildren, Jeff (Dawn) Woodburn of Marion, Tim (Angie) Woodburn of Rochester, Minn., Pat (Kelly) Woodburn of West Branch and Amy Sauser of Cedar Rapids; six grandchildren, Cory, Chelsie, Bryce Hochstedler, Kennedy Hochstedler, Amanda and Meridyth Bates; 12 stepgrandchildren, Lindsey, Emily, Mackenzie, Kristin, Madison, Taylor, Allison, Kacey, Jacob, Tanner, Parker and Dawson; two brothers, Lyle (Marilyn) Hochstedler of Kalona and Marvin D. (Christine) Hochstedler of Iowa City; and a sister, Marjorie Slabaugh of Kalona.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Virginia (Potter) Hochstedler; and a brother-in-law, Dave Slabuagh.
Kenny was loved by many and will be greatly missed by all.
Celebration of Life services will be 11 a.m. Monday, July 27, at Kalona Methodist Church. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Joetown. Visitation will be Saturday, July 25, from 6 to 8 p.m., and Sunday, July 26, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. where the family will greet friends from 1 to 4 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. at Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona.
A memorial fund has been established for Kalona First Responders and Kalona Golf Club. www.powellfuneral homes.com
