Keith M. Smith, 91, of Postville, passed away Saturday, Oct. 11, 2014, at his home in Postville.
Keith Morgan, the son of Lester and Dora (Harris) Smith, was born Oct. 21, 1922, in Postville, Iowa. Keith graduated from Postville High School in 1940. Keith was united in marriage with Rose Marie Brewer on June 15, 1944, at the St. Bridget Rectory in Postville. Keith farmed his family's farm, north of Postville, his entire life.
He retired from farming
in 2008.
During his high school years, Keith played left field on the first Postville baseball team to earn a spot in the state tournament in 1940. During their 14-1 season, he hit 10 home runs and batted .375. He was a member of the Postville Farmers Co-op board from 1966 until 1984. Keith enjoyed woodworking, remodeling his cabin, the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team, red cows and red tractors.
Keith is survived by his wife, Rose Marie of Postville; three children, Phillip (Joyce) Smith of Duluth, Minn., Virginia (Rob) Moore of Strawberry Point and Michelle (Glenn) Snyder of Duluth, Minn.; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and sisters-in-law, Josephine Smith of Monona and Patricia Karriker of Boonville, Mo.
Keith was preceded in death by a son, Bruce; a daughter, Connie (Gordon) Gelo; a grandson, Rhett Gelo; his parents; his brother, Rodney Smith, sisters-in-law, Mildred Trappe and Helen Brewer; brothers-in-law, Lavern Brewer, Harold Trappe, Grant Karricker and Raymond Brewer; niece, Linda (Don) Smith; and great-niece, Brenda Krambeer.
Memorials may be to Allamakee County Home Health, Postville Fire Department or the Winneshiek County Hospice.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 17, at the Community Presbyterian Church in Postville. The Rev. Gary Catterson will be the officiant. Visitation will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday, at the church. Interment will be held at the Postville Cemetery.
