Keith A. Smith, 73, of Independence, Iowa, died on Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2021, at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence, Iowa.
Keith was born on Feb. 22, 1948, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of Verlan and Twylah (Huston) Smith. He was a 1966 graduate of Independence High School. He attended Greenville College and the Iowa State University to pursue a business degree. On July 23, 1968, he entered the U.S. Army. He served proudly with the 101st Airborne Division in Vietnam until July 1, 1970. He returned to Iowa and married Linda G. Andersen on Aug. 19, 1972. Together, they made their home in rural Independence, were Keith farmed for many years.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Linda Smith, Independence, Iowa; his sons, Geoffry (Lina) Smith, Sarasota, Fla., Ben (Erin Rubenstein) Smith, Waconia, Minn., and Keith "Chip" (Stacy) Smith Jr., Fargo, N.D.; his grandchildren, Mira Smith, Sami Smith, Liam and Luke Rubenstein, Keith Smith III "Trey" and Jett Smith; a sister, Karen (Bob) Stewart, St. Louis, Mo.; two brothers, Gary (Susan) Smith Shoreview, Minn., and Dean (Sue) Smith, Hampton, Iowa, and several nieces and nephews.
Keith was preceded in death by his parents, Verlan and Twylah Smith and Junior and Lila Andersen; and a granddaughter, Nadia Smith, in 2009.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 21, at the Hope Wesleyan Church in Independence, Iowa, with the Rev. Robert Solon presiding. Burial will be held at Cedar Memorial Cemetery in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday Aug. 20, at the Reiff Family Center – Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence.
