KATIE HYE LANNING
Marion
Katie Hye Lanning, 30, of Marion, Iowa, gained her angel wings on Sept. 27, 2018, following a long illness. She
is now walking hand in hand with her grandfather in heaven. Katie was born in Seoul, South Korea, on
March 23, 1988. She was lovingly adopted at the age of 3 months by her father, Ron, and her mother, Nancy.
Katie graduated from John F. Kennedy High School in 2006. While at Kennedy, Katie was actively involved in Color Guard and Winter Guard. Following graduation, she was a Color Guard instructor. She also participated in volleyball, being selected to play in tournaments as far away as the Hawaiian islands.
Following high school, Katie attended Kirkwood Community College, where she earned her emergency medical technician (EMT-B) certification.
Katie adored animals, but none more than her dogs, Charlie and Jax. She loved all things Dr. Who and Pokemon Go, and was passionate about the Chicago Cubs, frequently attending their games.
Katie is survived by her fiance and the love of her life, Gavin Vorwald; mother, Nancy Lanning of Cedar Rapids; father, Ron (Mic) Lanning of Ellenton, Fla.; and grandmothers, Shirley Lanning of Alburnett and Arlene Broxey of Cedar Rapids. She also is survived by many aunts, uncles and cousins, as well as numerous friends.
Katie was preceded in death by her grandfather, Richard Lanning.
A celebration of life will be held at Good News Baptist Church, 1203 Third Ave. SW, Cedar Rapids, on Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2018, from 4 to 7 p.m., with a small service at 6:30 p.m. for those interested.
At Katie's request, she will be cremated.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cedar Valley Humane Society, 7411 Mount Vernon Rd. SE, Cedar Rapids, IA 52403.
