Kathleen Tjaden, 91, died Thursday, Feb. 16, 2017, at Monticello Nursing and Rehabilitation Center following an extended illness.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 20, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Monticello. with interment in Oakwood Cemetery, Monticello. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Goettsch Funeral Home, Monticello, where a parish vigil service will be held at 4 p.m. Visitation will resume at 9:30 a.m. Monday at the church until service time.

Surviving are four children, Leo (Sue) Tjaden, Patty (Tom) Lee, Ron (Dee) Tjaden and Jim (Sheila) Tjaden, all of Monticello; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Betty (Jerry) Naylor, Scotch Grove, and Martina (Phil) Reilly, Topeka, Kan.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Richard; a sister, Margaret Murphy; and two brothers, Leo and Dennis McDonald.
Kathleen McDonald was born Dec. 17, 1925, in Boulder Township, Linn County, Iowa, the daughter of Martin and Marie Donovan McDonald. She graduated from Coggon Schools in 1943. Kathleen McDonald and Richard Tjaden were married Aug. 21, 1944, at the S.S. Peter and Paul Lutheran Church parsonage. The couple farmed in Castle Grove Township and later near Prairieburg. In November 2004, they moved to Monticello. Richard preceded her in death on Dec. 10, 2005.
Kathleen loved to go dancing, play cards with neighbors and friends, and travel with her sisters. She always thought of everyone else first before herself.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Monticello Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for all the wonderful care of our mother the past six years.
