Kathleen “Kathy” Jean Hackney, 75, of Cedar Rapids, died peacefully at her home on Friday, January 23, 2026, of natural causes. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, at St. Ludmila Catholic Church, with the Rev. Kenneth Glaser officiating. Burial will follow at St. John Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, at Teahen Funeral Home, with a rosary and vigil service at 4 p.m. Those not wishing to attend the rosary or vigil service may visit with the family from 4:45 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday or at the church on Wednesday, beginning at 9:30 a.m.
Kathy is survived by her husband, James Hackney of Cedar Rapids; son, Kevin (Kendra) Hackney of McKinleyville, California; granddaughter, Zoey Hackney; brother-in-law, Gary (Judy) Hackney of Cedar Rapids; her sister-in-law, Marilyn (Gary) Gates and brother-in-law, Bob (Kelly) Hackney all of Cedar Rapids; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Marvin and Lucille Horwedel, and her mother-in-law, Lillian Hackney.
Kathleen was born on October 28, 1950, in Madison, South Dakota, the daughter of Marvin and Lucille (Lenton) Horwedel. She was raised in Cedar Rapids and attended St. Ludmila School, graduating from Jefferson High School in 1968. Kathy went on to attend St. Luke’s Nursing School, graduating in 1971.
She married James L. Hackney on July 24, 1971 at St. Ludmila’s Church in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. They were married for more than 54 years. She worked for many years as a registered nurse, serving with Cedar Rapids Community Schools until her retirement in 2012.
Kathleen enjoyed baking, crafting, ceramics, and cross-stitch, and fondly remembered camping trips in her younger years. She loved to travel, especially to Hawaii, Alaska, the Canadian Rockies, Boston, and California. A loyal Iowa State Cyclones fan, she was a season ticket holder for Cyclone football for 35 years. Kathleen was also a proud member of the Red Hat Society. She was a steady and caring presence, showing her love through quiet faithfulness and attention to detail.
