Kathleen Hazel
KATHLEEN HAZEL
Cedar Rapids
Kathleen Hazel was welcomed into the arms of The Lord, surrounded by her family, on Aug. 8, 2014, one day shy of her 92nd birthday at St. Luke's Hospital hospice unit in Cedar
Rapids.
Kathleen was born Aug. 9, 1922, the daughter of Neil and Doris (Richmond) Magee, at home in rural Dunkerton. In 1939, at age 16, she graduated from Dunkerton High School as valedictorian and then earned a degree from Iowa State Teachers College. She married George Wilson Cox on Aug. 31, 1944, and later married Joe Hazel on July 1, 1968. Kathleen and George raised six children: Carol, Dennis, Diane, Ronald, Barbara and Marilyn.
A soft-spoken woman, Kathleen loved the Lord and devoted her life in service to others. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Kathleen taught third and fourth grade in Preston, Iowa, and at Dunkerton School for over 20 years, retiring in 1984. She also taught a literacy program at Hawkeye Tech.
She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church in Dunkerton and American Baptist Women.
Kathleen loved to read and was librarian in Dunkerton for several years. She loved all sports, and especially enjoyed watching college football and basketball and her Iowa Hawkeyes! She watched "Jeopardy" on television and always knew the answers before anyone else.
Kathleen was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; son, Ronald; sister, Dorothy Gilbert; and brothers, Kenneth Magee and Marion Magee in infancy.
Surviving are five children, Carole (Fred) Sprague of Marshalltown, Dennis (Lisa) Cox of Denver, Iowa, Diane (Edward) Foss of Cedar Rapids, Barbara (Darwin, deceased) Fuller of Waterloo and Marilyn Eberle of Muscatine; 17 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
Kathleen will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Visitation for Kathleen will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 11, at White Funeral Home in Jesup. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12, at First Baptist Church in Dunkerton, with viewing an hour before the service. Burial will follow the service at Fairview Cemetery, Dunkerton.
