Kathaleen Mae Hanson, 84, of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, April 20, 2017, at Hiawatha Care Center. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 24, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. A visitation will be held Sunday from
3 to 6 p.m. at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Burial: Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
Kathy was born Aug. 2, 1932, the daughter of Pete and Vera Mickelsen in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where she graduated from McKinley High School.
On May 30, 1955, she married Walter Hanson at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Kathy volunteered at Mercy Baby Well Clinic and later went to work at J.C. Penney in the catalog department, where she would eventually retire.
Kathy enjoyed bowling, her pets, bird watching, gardening, HGTV and "Criminal Minds." She also enjoyed attending events at the VFW, such as bingo and brunch. Kathy was a proud supporter of her grandkids' events. She especially loved sitting atop the Jefferson softball hill cheering on her granddaughter, and later sitting near home plate cheering on the Mount Mercy softball team. She was an animal lover and had several pets over the years most recently, her beloved poodle, Minnie; her parakeet, Chester; and her goldfish, Toby.
Kathy was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and VFW Women's Auxiliary.
She is survived by her five daughters, Debra (Don) Krall, Kay (Robert) Hanson, Tina Hanson, Karen (Mark) Burgart and Nancy Hanson; her grandchildren, Brian (Sheena) Krall, Alicia (Anthony) Krall, Bailey Burgart and Carson Burgart; her great-grandchildren, Cael, Amayah, Adrian, Dynasty and Anthony; and brother-in-law, Barney Hanson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter; her parents; and a sister, Dorothy Driscoll.
A special thank-you goes to Dr. MaryAnn Nelson and the Hiawatha Care Center staff, who became her family and friends; and to the staff who would stop by and chat, give her hugs, or just check in on her. She cherished your friendship and kindness. We are truly grateful you were a part of her life.
