Karl Robert Warner, 85, of Iowa City, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, June 11, 2014, at Mercy Hospice Iowa City. A casual memorial celebration of life will be held on Sunday, June 29, at 1 p.m., with service at 1:30 p.m., at the Elks Country Club.
Karl was born in Sioux City, Iowa, on July 16, 1928. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the Army. He met the love of his life, Betty, and they were married on March 30, 1951. He enlisted in the Air Force and graduated from Morningside College in Sioux City in 1954.
Karl was an advertising executive for the Sioux City Journal newspaper, the Fort Dodge Messenger and then moved to Iowa City and joined the Press Citizen for 20 years. He was a specialty advertising representative at Banker's Advertising for 28 years, retiring in 2009 at the age of 79.
Karl was active in many community organizations, with Sertoma being a favorite. He was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church.
Karl was blessed with a passion for his work and family. He was an eternally happy, positive person. His smile and demeanor was infectious. He loved people, especially his children and more recently, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed golf and any sport his family was involved with. He especially loved the family vacations at the lake.
Karl is survived by his wife of 63 years, Betty; three sons, Douglas (Laura), Gary (Susan) and Steve (Laura); seven grandchildren, Nicole, Karl, Ashley, Jacob, Christopher, Evan and Garrett; and five great-grandchildren, Faith, Georgia, Holden, Laikyn and Jaxson..
