Karl E. Schillig Jr, 82, died peacefully at his home on Tuesday, June 5, 2018.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Monday, June 11, at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Father Steven Witt officiating. Visitation will be Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Joseph's Cemetery or the church.
Karl was born Oct. 22, 1935, in Iowa City, the son of Karl E. and Elizabeth "Betty" Grady Schillig Sr. He was a graduate of St. Mary's High School and attended the University of Iowa. Karl served in the U.S. Navy from 1954 to 1958. On Aug. 11, 1960, Karl married Kay Buster at St. Mary's Church.
Karl was the chief operator at the University of Iowa Oakdale Heating Plant, retiring in 1992.
He was a member of St. Mary's Church and enjoyed the Chicago Cubs and Hawkeye sports.
Karl is survived by his four children, Doug Schillig of Aurora, Ill., Teresa (Steve) Bayer of Ridgecrest, Calif., Kim Schillig of North Liberty and Lisa (Todd) Jacobson of Iowa City; two sisters, Susan (Joel) Murdock of Fruitland, Iowa, and Elizabeth (Thomas) Hrubik of Moore, Okla.; his grandson, Levi Bayer; and former spouse, Kay of Iowa City.
Karl was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Rolland and Steve.
