Karen Ann Wiederin, 77,
of Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, Dec. 20, 2020, at Mercy Medical Center. A private funeral Mass will be held. Burial: St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family from 10 a.m. to noon Monday, Dec. 28, at Teahen Funeral Home. In accordance with COVID-19 rules, a mask must be worn at all times.
Karen is survived by five children, Daniel (Kristi) of Tampico, Ill., Bret (Tami), Curtis and Shawn (Lisa), all of Cedar Rapids, and Amy (Phil) Bartachek of North Liberty; grandchildren, Blayke (Ausha), Josh (Morgan), Chelsea (Alex) Larson, Amanda (John) Bradford, Brandon, Grant, Ian and Ashton Wiederin, and Ethan, Lucas and Katie Bartachek; great-grandchildren, Imari, Alexis, Eloise, Ellie, Noah and Corbin; sisters, Rita Hermsen, Norma (Craig) MacQuaid and Jean Weber; in-laws, Betty Wiederin, Joleen Wiederin, Alice (Bruce) Riedesel, Irene (Dan) Wurzer and James (Kathy) Wiederin; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob; sister, Kathy Gravitt; brothers-in-law, Merle Wiederin, Elmer Wiederin, Vernon Weber and Gene Hermsen; niece, Robin Hermsen; and nephew, Jeff Wurzer.
Karen was born Dec. 26, 1942, in Carroll, Iowa, the daughter of Edward and Theresa Yohnke Ratigan. She graduated from St. Bernard High School, Breda, Iowa in 1960. Karen married Robert Wiederin on Dec. 29, 1962, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Auburn, Iowa. She was a nurse's aid prior to marriage, a home daycare provider for many years and was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church.
Karen enjoyed playing cards, especially with Alex, Shirley, Jim and Susie. She had a huge heart, warm smile and loved to laugh. She was lovingly called "Queen" by her husband. She was a master at doing laundry and was known to have the whitest-whites in town. Karen had an immense love for her family, her daycare families and family friends and she enjoyed attending her grandchildren's activities.
The family would like to thank Mercy Medical Center for their outstanding care and compassion.
