Karen Kay Nelson, 65, of Cedar Rapids, died Monday, May 4, 2015, at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids. Services: 10 a.m. Saturday, May 9, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. Family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, May 8, at the funeral home. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include her children, Tammy Beatty and David (Renee) Nelson, all of Cedar Rapids; one granddaughter, Jennifer Beatty of Cedar Rapids; siblings, Donald Peniska of Arlington, Va., and Sandra (George) Herman of San Antonio, Texas; numerous nephews; and a niece.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Darwin; son, Gary; and a brother, Kim.
Karen was born on Dec. 22, 1949, in Sioux City, Iowa, the daughter of Edward and Thelma (St. Clair) Peniska. On April 4, 1970, she married Darwin Nelson in Sioux City. Karen enjoyed working on crossword puzzles, reading Amish novels and shopping. She had a wonderful time feeding anyone who came to her home. She was also an avid Cedar Rapids Kernels fan. Karen's family meant the world to her and every moment spent with her granddaughter, Jennifer, was a treasured one.
