Kardon, Thelma Sherman
Thelma Sherman Kardon, 92, of Des Moines died Monday, Aug. 26, 2013, at the Iowa Jewish Senior Life Center. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Tifereth Israel Synagogue, Des Moines, of which she was a longtime member. Burial will be at Jewish Glendale Cemetery.
Thelma was born in Chelsea, Mass., on Feb. 12, 1921, to Max and Dora Sherman. She served as a sergeant military police woman during World War II and remained in Des Moines following her discharge in 1945. She made a home for her husband, Fred, and their family in Des Moines. She will be remembered for providing love to her family and community through all of her cooking and baking. Her favorite phrase was “Don't forget to smile!”
Thelma was preceded in death by her husband, Fred in 1997; as well as her parents; two sisters, Ruth Schwartz and Sylvia Pett; and two brothers, Murray and Jack Sherman.
Those left to cherish her memory include her two sons, Dennis (Shelley) Kardon of New York, N.Y. and Randy Kardon, M.D., Ph.D. of Iowa City; granddaughter, Julia Kardon of New York City; three sisters-in-law, Darlene Kardon of Los Angeles, Calif., Ruth Sherman of Boston, Mass. and Irma Sherman of Florida; niece and nephew, Sheila and Harlan Feintech of Des Moines; and many other nieces and nephews.
