Kann, Frederick W.
Frederick W. Kann, 88, of Guttenberg, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2012, at his home surrounded by his family. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, at St. Mary's Church, Guttenberg, with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Tuecke/Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg. Visitation also will be held one hour before mass Saturday at the church.
He was born Feb. 21, 1924, on a farm west of Guttenberg, son of Gregor X and Anna Miller Kann. He married Rosemary Wachendorf on Jan. 29, 1945, at Immaculate Conception Church, North Buena Vista; she preceded him in death on March 6, 2009.
Fritz was a World War II Army Sergeant veteran serving in the Philippines and Korea. He was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Service Medal and a Good Conduct Medal. He farmed his entire life first at Ryan, then Garber and for the last 62 years at Leaf Road, Guttenberg.
Fritz was a lifetime member of St. Mary's Church, Knights of Columbus, AMVETS, the American Legion, Farm Bureau, Miraculous Medal Association and the Maryknoll Missionaries Associate. He spent many hours volunteering at St. Mary's Church and School. His greatest joys in life were farming with his wife and their family, visiting with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, an evening of dancing at Lakeside, a good euchre game, sunrises and sunsets.
Grandchildren will always remember grandpa's one liners, his political analysis, history lessons and dry sense of humor!
Surviving are his children, Fred L., Patricia A. (Jerry Kolker), Richard A. (Rosalyn Ramler), Dianne L. (Fred Walke), Greg D. (Lori Ludens), Mary S. (Richard Eulberg), William J., Gary E., Jane R. Parker, Nancy J. (Clay Nuehring), and Brian R. (Melissa Larson), 32 grandchildren; 31great-grandchildren; and three siblings, Donald (Helen) Kann, Owen Kann and Jeanette Berns.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Joseph on April 24, 1977 and John on May 14, 2009; one grandson, Daniel Kann; one great-grandson, Aiden Kolker; two brothers, Virgil and Duane Kann; one sister, Arlene St. John; and a daughter-in-law, Trudy Wessels Kann.
Memorials may be directed to St. Mary's School or the Clayton Ridge Kann Family Memorial Award or plant a tree in his memory.
