Kane, Darwin 'Dardie' Eugene
Darwin “Dardie” Eugene Kane, 77, of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, Dec. 9, 2010, at Mercy Medical Center following a long illness. Funeral Mass: 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, by Father Christoher Podhajsky. Burial, with military graveside services, will be at St. John's Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Papich-Kuba Janeba Chapel West, 1604 J St. SW, where a rosary begins at 7 p.m. A reception will be held in St. Wenceslaus' Chihak Hall after the burial.
Darwin is survived by his wife of 48 years, Anna Maria; his son, Patrick; his daughter, Jacqueline (David) Miller; his brother, Bill (Marilyn) Diesch; his sisters, Sharon Paulson and Kathleen (Gary) Carter; grandchildren, Cassandra, Michael, Amanda, Kevin, Richard, Sara and Madison; great-grandchildren, Paige and Noelle; and many nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his mother and stepfather, Julia Ellen and George Hanson; grandmother, Delilah Hronik; sister, Maryann Kane; uncle, Charles Crago; and brother-in-law, James Paulson.
Darwin was born May 24, 1933, in Cedar Rapids to Julia Ellen Kane. He joined the National Guard in 1950 and was activated during the Korean War. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1957 and was stationed all over the world, including involvement in the Vietnam conflict from 1971-1972. Darwin served for 23 years in the United States Air Force and retired in 1974.
Darwin attended Immaculate Conception School as a child and was a member of St. Ludmila's Catholic Church. He was a graduate of Kirkwood Community College and the University of Iowa. Darwin was a member of American Legion Hanford Post 5 and a lifelong member of Knights of Columbus 4th Degree.
Darwin worked for Century Engineering, Quaker Oats, Turner Microphone, Penford and Corn Sweeteners. As a resident of California, Darwin worked for Bunyard's Masonry Yard and Grice, Lund and Turkington CPA firm.
Military graveside services will be conducted by American Legion Hanford Post 5.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Darwin's name to the American Diabetes Association or the American Heart Association.
