Kaalberg, Betty R.
Betty R. Kaalberg, 74, of 140 Knisel St., Riverside, passed away Wednesday, May 4, 2011, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, from complications of a stroke. Funeral services for Betty will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 7, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Riverside. Father Rich Adam will officiate the services. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Following the committal services at the cemetery, a time of food and fellowship will be held at St. Mary's Parish Center. Visitation for Betty will be held Friday, May 6, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Sorden-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services in Riverside, with a 7 p.m. rosary service.
Betty was born Aug. 15, 1936, the daughter of James and Arlene (Stolley) Lungquist. She was raised in Lone Tree, Iowa and married Frank E. Kaalberg on Sept. 20, 1958. Betty worked as a bookkeeper in Oakdale before the couple moved to Riverside.
Betty was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Parish and served on the Parish Council for many years. Betty was involved in numerous committees at St. Mary's Parish, including St. Mary's Education Center Building Committee, Labor Day Committee, member of the Circle Ladies and Y Catholic.
Betty was a Riverside City Council member since 2007 and a member of the Advisory Committee for the University of Iowa River Crossing Clinic, member of Riverside's Community Visioning Committee, and a member of Riverside's Veterans Memorial Park Committee.
When not spending time doing work for her city or her church, she loved the Hawkeyes.
Betty's wit, good humor, and willingness to serve others will be missed by all of the different organizations with which she was associated.
Survivors include her sons, Kirk Kaalberg (Renee) and Scott Kaalberg; grandchildren, Katie, Kourtney and Lindsey Kaalberg; great-grandson, Alex; brothers-in-law, Ambrose Kaalberg (Janet) and Kenny Kaalberg (Gloria); sisters-in-law, Loretta Peterson and Pauline Murphy; and many many friends.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Frank; her parents, James and Arlene Lungquist; her brothers, Jerry Nelson Lungquist and George N. Lungquist; and her sister, Mary Margaret Lungquist.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to The Betty Kaalberg /Riverside Santa Memorial Fund.
