Junior D. (J.D.) Follas, 93, of Iowa City, passed away at his home on Thursday, July 21, 2016.
J.D. was born July 16, 1923, in Sylvania, Ohio, the son of Doris C. and Ethel (Spilane) Follas. He grew up in Sylvania, graduated from Burnham High School and attended the University of Toledo.
J.D. first worked for Chevrolet-Toledo, a division of General Motors. On Sept. 19, 1942, J.D. married Mary Ann Lepke in Sylvania. During World War II, he served in Africa from 1943 to 1945 in the U.S. Army Air Corps, earning the rank of staff sergeant. He returned to his job at Chevrolet-Toledo, where he continued to work until 1951. Later that year, J.D. accepted a position at Owens Brush Co., from 1951 to 1958 in Toledo, and from 1958 to 1984 in Iowa City, where he held the position as vice president of administration at the time of his retirement.
J.D. was a past member of the Elks Lodge and Country Club, Moose Lodge, Iowa City Chamber of Commerce, American Cancer Society and longtime member of Junior Achievement.
In his free time, he enjoyed playing golf.
Survivors include his two children, Patricia A. (James) Harvey and William R. Follas; a grandson, William Bradley Follas; a granddaughter, Michelle R. Follas; and three great-granddaughters, Kiersten, Mikayla and Jayden.
J.D. will be dearly missed by friends and family.
J.D. was preceded in death his wife of 70 years, Mary Ann; and his mother, father, three sisters and four brothers.
Private family graveside services will be held at Oakland Cemetery in Iowa City.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the American Cancer Society.
