Julie Madison Corkery, 62, of Iowa City, died unexpectedly on Sunday, March 26, 2023. A gathering for family and friends to remember Julie’s life will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 1, at Gay & Ciha Funeral Home, 2720 Muscatine Ave., Iowa City.
Julie was born on Oct. 14, 1960 in Independence, Iowa. She was the daughter of N. Clark Madison and Lillian (Behan) Madison. In 1979, she graduated from Saint John’s High School in Independence, Iowa. Julie went on to graduate from Mount Mercy College in 1983, where she played basketball. Following her graduation, she completed her doctoral training in psychology at Iowa State University and her clinical training at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. She then worked as a psychologist at the University of Iowa Counseling Service for 30 years, most of these years as the training director. Throughout this time she served many, many individual clients and supervised the clinical training of hundreds of future psychologists.
Julie lived a full life. She took great pride in her daughters’ accomplishments in school and sports. She was always in attendance. Whether it be cold track meets or hot and humid softball games, she never missed a beat. Julie was a curious person, always learning and reading. One of her greatest joys was making memories by traveling to new places, camping and exploring with her family. She always looked forward to watching Hawkeyes men’s and women’s basketball games with Brian.
Julie married the love of her life, Brian Corkery, on Aug. 13, 1983. She considered her marriage and daughters, Anna, Marion, Iowa, and Emma, Kansas City, Mo., to be the best things that ever happened to her. Julie was particularly fond of spending time with her extended family.
She is survived by her husband, Brian; her daughters, Anna (fiance, Nate Walker) and Emma; her parents, N. Clark and Lillian Madison, Independence, Iowa; her brothers, Nick (Heidi) Madison, Phoenix, Ariz., and Matt (Teresa) Madison, Redding, Calif.; her siblings-in-law, Angie and Loren Pink, Independence, Iowa; and Debbie and Kevin Bundy, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother-in-law, James and Janis Corkery, Independence, Iowa; and her nephew, Nicholas Clark Madison IV.
In lieu of flowers, Julie requested donations to be made for her future grandchildren’s college funds. To share a thought, memory or condolence, please visit Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service website at www.gayandciha.com.
