Julianne Ethel O'Connell Beckett, 72, of Cedar Rapids, died on Friday, May 13, 2022, of natural causes at her home. Funeral Mass 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Matthew Catholic Church by the Rev. Douglas Loecke. Private burial at Mount Calvary Cemetery. A Vigil will be held at
3 p.m. Monday at Teahen Funeral Home. Those not attending the Vigil Service may visit with the family from 3:30 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home, and on Tuesday at the church after 9:30 a.m.
Julie is survived by her sister, Barbara Lenz of Dubuque; brothers, John (Mary Jo) O'Connell of Cedar Rapids, William (Mary) O'Connell of Bettendorf, Patrick (Sheryl) O'Connell of Marion, Michael (Brenda) O'Connell and Jamie (Dawn) O'Connell, both of Cedar Rapids; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and extended family.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Katie Beckett; parents, John and Barb O'Connell; sister, Maureen Barry; and brothers-in-law, Ed Lenz and Chris Barry.
Julie was born on Nov. 9, 1949, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of John and Barbara Ryan O'Connell. She attended St. Matthew School and graduated in 1967 from Regis High School, Clarke College, Dubuque, in 1971, and received a Master's degree from the University of Dayton (Ohio). On March 17, 1978, she married Mark Beckett at St. Matthew Catholic Church, they later divorced. Julie was a school teacher and an advocate for children with special needs.
Julie enjoyed watching football, the Wheel of Fortune and seeing her brothers play in their band. She loved family gatherings, going out to eat, especially for Margaritas at the Hacienda las Gloria's on Cinco de Mayo, and helping people who had nowhere else to turn. Julie was a remarkable person and will be missed.
Instead of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Matthew Catholic Church.
