Julia A. Dean Miltner, 96, longtime Lake Macbride and Melrose Meadows resident, died peacefully Sunday, March 2, 2014, at Lantern Park Care Center. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, March 7, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Iowa City, with Father John Spiegel officiating. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Lensing Oak Hill, Coralville, where a rosary will be recited at 4:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice or Mayors Youth Empowerment Program.
Julia was born July 11, 1917, in Morse, Iowa, the daughter of John and Marie Fuhrmeister Miller. She was raised in Morse. Julia received her degree from Mount Mercy College. On May 28, 1940, she married Maurice Dean. He died in 1973. On Dec. 28, 1974, she married Joseph Miltner. Joe died in 1983.
Julia taught in the Morse Country School and later was librarian and administrator at Central Junior High School. Julie and Joe served as co-administrators at the Johnson County Home for many years.
Julia was a member of St. Mary's Church, the Altar and Rosary Society and was a volunteer with Helping Hands and a docent at the Old Capitol. She liked to play bridge, travel and garden. Julia was an accomplished pianist and enjoyed playing in the family band in her younger years. Most important to her was family.
Survivors include her three children, Robert (Kathie) Dean of Montgomery, Texas, and their children, Lissa and Gregory (Meredith), Lawrence (Laurie) Dean of Cupertino, Calif., and their children, Emily and Courtney, and Mary (Bruce) Schwab of Iowa City, and their daughter, Kristin; three stepdaughters, Mary Jean Donovan of Goodyear, Ariz., Barbara Ann (Tim) Hill of Schaumburg, Ill., and Betty Jo (Bruce) Hensley of Madera, Calif.; her brother, Robert Miller of Solon; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and
extended family.
Julia was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; one daughter, Linda Williams; her brother George; and stepson, Bill Miltner.
