Julia Carrie (Bena) Hulshizer, 102, was called to her Heavenly Home on Dec. 1, 2022, after a long battle with congestive heart failure and dementia. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 8, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 520 Wilson Ave. SW, Cedar Rapids. Private family burial will follow at Cedar Memorial Cemetery in Cedar Rapids.
Julia was born on June 9, 1920, on the family farm to Wencil and Carrie (Christle) Bena. She completed ninth grade at Rosedail School, within walking distance from her home. She worked for the Higley family and took care of her ailing grandmother. On June 5, 1946, she married the love of her life, Frank M. Hulshizer. He died on July 14, 1981, after 35 years of marriage. She is the mother of two children: Frank M. Hulshizer, Jr. and Victoria J. Hulshizer Oakley.
Julia is survived by her son, Frank (Susan) Hulshizer; her daughter, Victoria (William) Oakley; her grandchildren, Janet (Doug) Henry, Christopher Oakley, Brande (Russell Thier) Hulshizer and Britney (fiance, Travis Roster) Hulshizer; her stepgrandson, Brent Martwig; three great-grandsons; four great-granddaughters; two step-great-grandsons; and soon one step-great-granddaughter. She is also survived by one god child, Kimberly (John) Murdoch.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank; her parents; her brothers and their wives, Leo (Dorothy) and Ernest (Rose) Bena; and a nephew, Robert Bena. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Memorials may be directed to Mercy Hospice.
