Julia Joan Bennett, 97, passed away peacefully at Crestview Acres on Wednesday, March 26, 2014. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 17, at First Presbyterian Church, Cedar Rapids. Miss Bennett was born in Chittagong, India, on Sept. 16, 1916, the daughter of George Ernest Bennett and Frances Sophia Bosshardt. She studied ballet in Calcutta at an early age and continued her dance and musical education throughout the entirety of her life. Miss Bennett was an alumnus of Lowther College, North Wales. She was a long-standing member of the Beethoven Club in Cedar Rapids.
She was preceded in death by her friend and colleague, Edna Dieman.
Together, they established the Dieman-Bennett Studio of Dance and the Dieman-Bennett Dance Theatre of the Hemispheres. For nearly 50 years, they provided instruction for classical ballet, Indian and Spanish dance, as well as contemporary tap and jazz.
Survivors include her many students in whom she instilled a respect and passion for dance.

records are open to the
public.
