Judy A. Popek Gibson, 81, of Cedar Rapids, passed away unexpectedly Friday, Jan. 7, 2022, in her home. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 14, at St. Matthew's Catholic Church with Father Loecke presiding. Burial will follow in St. John's Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 13, at Brosh Chapel and The Avacentre in Cedar Rapids, located at 2121 Bowling St. SW. In support of Judy's love for her favorite team, please feel free to wear Iowa Hawkeye attire to the visitation.
Judy was born Jan. 4, 1941, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of William P. and Millicent M. (Milke) Popek. She attended Mount Mercy Academy, Mount Mercy College and Kirkwood. Judy retired in 2008 as an account coordinator from CoAms of Iowa. She enjoyed watching the Iowa Hawkeyes, Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears, and spending time with her family, especially the grand and great-grandchildren. Judy had a special devotion to St. Anthony and was an active member of St. Matthew's Catholic Church. She was a past member of Junior League, Childrens Theater Board, and Cub Scout Den Mother and Catholic Charities Board.
Judy is survived by her children, Randy (Carrie) Gibson and Amy (Bill) Bellmer, both of Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren, Jason (Madie) Gibson, Taylor (Bonnie) Gibson, Michael Gibson, Brandon (Nessa) Galvin and Christal Alve-Frana; seven great-granddaughters and two great-grandsons; and one great-great-granddaughter; her brother, Dick (Gay) Popek of Seattle, Wash.; and a special cousin, Karolyn (Clark) Lang of Comfort, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Bill Popek, in 2004; and her significant other, Bruce A. Knott, in 1992.
Memorials may be directed to the family.
