JUDITH "JUDY" NANCY BURIAN
Cedar Rapids
Judith "Judy" Nancy Burian, 84, of Amarillo, Texas, formerly of Cedar Rapids, passed away Jan. 17, 2021.
Judy was born Oct. 10, 1936, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to Charlotte (Trachta) and Leonard Chadima (of St. Patrick's Parish). She was educated at Iowa State University and The Ohio State University, where she earned two masters degrees, including one in public administration. She met Richard J. Burian (of St. Ludmila Parish) at Iowa State and they were married on Jan. 19, 1957, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. Shortly after getting married, they moved to Central Ohio, where Judy worked for the State of Ohio. Judy and Richard raised six children there before relocating to the Texas Panhandle in their retirement years. They spent 58 wonderful years together before his passing in 2015.
Judy was an avid gardener and enjoyed traveling. She was fiercely proud of her Czech heritage and loved passing that heritage down to her children and grandchildren. Judy was a devout Catholic as a parishioner of St. Mary of the Assumption in Lancaster, Ohio, and, later, a faithful member of St. Mary's Cathedral in Amarillo. She attended Mass as often as she was able. She will be greatly missed.
Judy was preceded in death by her parents, Charlotte and Leonard Chadima; her husband, Richard J. Burian; and infant daughter, Teresa Marie Burian.
Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Burian of San Jose, Calif., and Jane Burian of Youngsville, N.C.; four sons, Dennis Burian (Deborah) of Oklahoma City, Okla., Thomas Burian (Cindy) of Plain City, Ohio, Andrew Burian (Robin) of Brownsburg, Ind., and John Burian (Kelley) of Thornville, Ohio; four grandchildren, Jason Swinning (Jill), Johanna Burian (David), Thomas Swinning (Jessica) and Megan Burian; and five great-granddaughters, Mikayla, Alma, Eleanor, Katie and Charlotte.
Memorial contributions in Judy's name may be made to Notre Dame Sisters Memorial Association, 3501 State St., Omaha, NE 68112.
