Judith “Judy” Ann Burns, 71, of Marion, Iowa, passed away on Friday, June 2, 2023, at St. Luke’s in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. In accordance with her wishes, the casket will be closed at all times. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, June 5, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Marion. Funeral service will begin at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 6, also at Murdoch Funeral Home, with the Rev. Jon C. Moss officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery in Cedar Rapids.
Judy was born on Oct. 4, 1951, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Jack and Jean (Goodlove) Lorence. She was a 1969 graduate of Linn-Mar High School and went on to earn her elementary education degree from UNI in 1973. On March 24, 1973, Judy was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart, Richard “Dick” Burns, in the Methodist Church in Marion. She was a teacher at Alburnett Community Schools until she retired after 28 years and truly cared about every student along the way. She was a member of Alburnett Methodist Church and the Alburnett Historical Society. She loved all kinds of crafts and her dedicated crafting friends, girls shopping trips and playing cards with friends. Judy was a lifelong learner and loved to share her knowledge with her family. Her kids and grandchildren meant everything to her, she was their biggest supporter. She was a perfectionist in many areas of her life from her put together appearance to organizing all the family activities. She always had to be doing something. Judy loved her second home in Florida and time spent with friends and family. Judy will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Judy is survived and lovingly remembered by her husband of 50 years, Dick Burns; children, Carrie (Matt) Olmstead of Alburnett, their children, Tyler, Mason and Ally; Ryan (Shelly) Burns of Marion, their children, Reece, Evan and Cora; Kelly (Ryan) Hemphill of Marion, their children, Bailey, Brayden and Riley; and Dana (Jamie) Tiernan of Marion, their children, Sloane, Jack and Piper; brother, Jon (Joan) Lorence of Solon, Iowa; mother-in-law, Carol (Burns) Zimpher of Walker; and several aunts, uncles and family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and father-in-law, Leland Burns; Ernie Zimpfer.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund had been established.
