Surviving Juanita are her son, Louis Jr. (Carol) Floden, Pella; daughter, Dr. Betty (Dr. Timothy) Cross, Mason City; son, Dr. Thomas (Dr. Linda) Floden, Mason City; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Preceding Juanita in death were her husband, Louis Sr.; infant son, Rodney; parents, Arnold and Lilias Powers; brother, Kenneth; brother, Donald; and sister, Dorothy.
Juanita Mae Powers was born March 6, 1929, in Oelwein, Iowa, the daughter of Arnold and Lilias Cocum Powers. Born in 1929 the year of the Crash, Juanita grew up during the Great Depression. Her father worked for the Great Western Railroad. Her mother, originally from England, came to the United States alone at the age of 14.
Juanita left high school her junior year at the age of 17 to marry the love of her life, Louis "Lou" L. Floden, on Aug. 12, 1946, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They were married 65 years. The first few years of their marriage were spent on the farm with Louie Jr. and their dog, Blackie.
She loved the farm and hated to leave it but a job opportunity for Lou led them to move into town, Oelwein. In 1965, another job transfer for Lou took them to Mount Vernon, where they lived until 2012, the year of Lou's death.
Juanita spent the last days of her life living in Mason City near her children and grandchildren.
Juanita was a homemaker all her life. She loved her home. She and Lou built their ranch style home in Mount Vernon in 1968, with Lou doing a lot of the construction and she the decorating.
She was very proud that all of her children finished college. She herself went back at the age of 51 and earned her high school diploma through Kirkwood Community College. She was a good cook and will be remembered for her big holiday dinners of turkey or ham, homemade ice cream, pies, cakes, cookies, cinnamon rolls and kolaches.
