Joyce Marie Hagen was born Nov. 5, 1963, in Iowa City, Iowa, the daughter of Richard and May (Sunken) Tiernan. She attended Lutheran Interparish School and graduated from Williamsburg High School. Joyce was united in marriage to Richard "Rick" Hagen on Aug. 22, 1987, at St. John Lutheran Church, near Homestead. Joyce worked at Amana Bakery, Paul Revere in Williamsburg and Paul Revere in Chatsworth, Ill. She enjoyed gardening, canning, collecting, sitting outside watching the birds, and dogs. Joyce passed away Monday, Dec. 28, 2020, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City at the age of 57 years.
She is survived by her mother, May Kruse of Williamsburg; six siblings, Mary (Paul) Morris of Santa Clara, Utah, Jean (Chuck) Finnegan of Oxford, Ralph Tiernan of Marion, CJ (Susan) Kruse of Victor, Charlie Kruse of Parnell and Jason Kruse of South Amana; and numerous nieces and nephew.
She was preceded in death by her father; husband, Rick, on Jan. 21, 2020; a brother, Donald Kruse; and a sister-in-law, Cathi Tiernan.
Private celebration of life memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 5, at Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg. The service will be livestreamed on the Powell Funeral Home website or Facebook page. Burial will be at St. John Lutheran Cemetery, near Homestead. Memorials may be given to University of Iowa Hospital Palliative Care Unit. Messages and tributes may be left at www.powellfuneralhomes.com.
