Joyce Belcher, nee Cox, passed away on March 12, 2017, at Parkview Manor in Wellman, Iowa. She was 93 years of age.
Joyce Cox was born in Harrison County, Mo., on July 2, 1923, one of seven children born to John Edward Cox and Delilah Hunter Cox. She graduated from Martinsville High School in 1941, and attended Maryville State College for two years.
In 1943, Joyce moved to Albuquerque, N.M., where she was employed in the quartermaster's office at Kirkland Field. While there, she met Lewis Vernon Belcher. The couple was married on May 4, 1945, in Hays, Kan., and had two children, Robert and Rebecca.
The family moved to Wellman in 1951, where they remained for the duration of their lives.
Joyce was very involved in community organizations, and was an active member of the United Christian and Baptist Church in Kalona, Iowa. She worked at the Wellman Post Office for 17 years.
Joyce had a wonderful gift of making friends with almost everybody she met, and she treasured every friendship. She loved playing golf and bridge, and shopping. She will be deeply missed by her family and by all who loved her.
Joyce is survived by her two children, Robert Belcher of Harper, Iowa, and Rebecca Belcher of Marion, Iowa; her very beloved granddaughter, Deidre Ann Belcher of Fairfax, Iowa; and her younger sister, Mary Ann Brimer of Wichita, Kan. She is predeceased by her husband, Lewis Belcher; and by five siblings, Oleta Dowell, Theta Wilson, Vernon Cox, and Helen and Phillis Cox.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 18, at 10:30 a.m. at United Christian and Baptist Church in Kalona. Burial will be in Wellman Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 9:30 a.m. until service time. A memorial fund has been established from the Wellman Historical Society. Powell Funeral Home is caring for Joyce and her family.
