JOSEPH WALTER CARSON
Oakland, Calif.
Joseph Walter Collins Carson, of Oakland, Calif., died on Jan. 11, 2022, from complications of diabetes mellitus and a chronic neurological disease. Joseph Walter was born July 9, 1955, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Known by Walt or Walter during his years growing up in Iowa, he began using Joe or Joseph in his adult years working in Minneapolis, Minn., and San Francisco, Calif. Joe graduated from Marion High School in 1973. He attended St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn., and Coe College in Cedar Rapids, earning a degree in history
in 1979. Joe's profession revolved around music, with specialized performance skills in guitar, bass and drums; and different jobs in the social work field.
Due to a chronic neurological illness, Joe was disabled sooner than anticipated, and became a strong advocate for people with disabilities and others struggling in our unforgiving economy. He was a prolific writer of prose and poetry and was the driving force behind many newsletters and SF area publications. Joe is widely remembered for his intellect, joyful use of language, love of music, voracious reading and remarkable social skills, which made him approachable by people from all walks of life.
Joe was preceded in death by his mother, Marion Collins Carson; and father, Joseph William Carson.
He is survived by his younger brothers, Sam and Harry, both of Cedar Rapids; and his sister Emily of Marion, Iowa.
Interment in a family plot in Knoxville, Iowa, will take place in the spring, when burial conditions are favorable. Due to COVID-19 considerations, a private gathering will be held, date to be determined. Please share your memories at JoeMovesOn@yahoo.com or on Facebook @JoeMovesOn. Gifts in memory of Joe can be directed to the Community Health Free Clinic, 947 14th Ave. SE, Cedar Rapids, IA 52402; or the charity of your choice.
