Joseph R. Koob, 90, of Monticello, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2018, surrounded by his family at home in Monticello.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 17, at Kramer Funeral Home in Monticello, with a parish vigil service at 4 p.m. Visitation will continue from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Monticello, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Burial will be in the church cemetery at a later date. The Rev. Paul Baldwin will officiate.
Joe was born July 26, 1928, the son of Emmert and Ida (Takes) Koob. He married Cecelia A. McAllister on April 11, 1950, in Cascade. She preceded him in death less than a month ago. Cecelia and Joe opened their business, Hollywood Garage, in 1955, and later moved to the current Koob Automotive location in 1962. In addition, he operated Skateway Roller Rink from 1968 until 2000. After selling the automotive business in 1986, he drove a school bus for the Monticello Community School District.
Joe was a faithful and active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where he ushered for several decades. He also was a life member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1821 where he served in several offices, including Grand Knight and the 4th Degree Dubourg Assembly. He also enjoyed bowling on the Knights team.
Survivors include his two sons, Steve (Madonna) Koob of Monticello and Phil (Carrie) Koob of Cascade; 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; siblings, Florence (George "Wilmer") Coyle of Anamosa, Katherine Gavin of Dubuque, Rose Marie (Alfred) Smith of Cascade and Mary Lou (Francis) Takes of Cedar Rapids; and in-laws, Dale Weidemann of Evansville, Ind., Flo McAllister of Cedar Rapids, Beverly McAllister of Marion, Marlene McAllister of Dyersville, Sr. Dolores McAllister, OSF of Dubuque, Rita Hoffman of Glendale, Wis., and Joseph Jr. (Marge) McAllister of Palmetto, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Cecelia; his parents; a daughter, Cynthia Redmond; a grandson, Matt Redmond; siblings, Dorothy Ann Koob in infancy, Irene (Merlin) Rogers and Helen Wiedemann; and in-laws, Tom Gavin, Jerome Hoffman, Irene (Walter) Huber, Alberta (Hal) VanNest, Loretta (Bob) Minton, Margaret (Joe) Bakey, Kathleen McAllister in infancy, James McAllister, Donald (Cecelia) McAllister, Paul (Myrtle Mae) McAllister, Robert (Marge) McAllister, Charles McAllister and Thomas McAllister.
