Joseph M. Olinger, 90, of Gainesville, Fla., formerly of Dubuque and Cedar Rapids, died at home Wednesday evening, Aug. 9, 2017, in Gainesville. Services will be at a later date.
Surviving are his wife, Shirlee Riddle Olinger; his children, Mary Jo Olinger and Jeanne (Olinger) Nilsson; son-in-law, Matt Nilsson; granddaughter, Kelsey Nilsson; grandson, Sam Nilsson; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father; wife, Kathleen; sister, Bernice Thomas; sisters-in-law; brothers-in-law; and son-in-law, Michael Maas.
Born Feb. 9, 1927, in Dubuque, Joseph was the son of Peter and Rachel (Duggan) Olinger. He graduated from Senior High School and in 1945 entered the U.S. military, where he served in Europe. He was united in marriage to Kathleen Eleanor Winders on Oct. 29, 1951. He worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone in both Dubuque and Cedar Rapids. In the 1980s, he relocated to Florida, where he eventually retired. Joe was a member of All Saints Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids, Knights of Columbus and the Telephone Pioneers.
Memorials may be given to the Alzheimer's Association.
