Cedar Rapids
Joseph W. Michalec, 88, of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, April 14, 2016, at Mercy Hallmar. Services: 10 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick Catholic Church by the Rev. Ivan Nienhaus. Burial: St. John Cemetery with military honors by American Legion Post 727. Friends may visit with the family Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m. at Teahen Funeral Home and on Monday after 9 a.m. at the church.
Joe is survived by four
sons, Joseph "Tom" (Michelle) Michalec, David Michalec, Donald Michalec and John Michalec (Stacy), all of Cedar Rapids; a daughter, Delores (Gary) Zumwalt of Sachse, Texas; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy, who died in 2009; two brothers, Rudolf and Frank; and two sisters, Mary Clay and Agnes Michalec.
Joe W. was born Aug. 7, 1927, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Frank and Marie Kvasnicka Michalec. He went to St. Wenceslaus Catholic School, elementary to high school, graduating in 1945. Joe married Dorothy Mae Thomas on Jan. 18, 1951, in Cedar Rapids at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. He served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1945 to 1947 and served in occupied Japan. Joe worked as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service.
Joe was a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers, Independent Order of Foresters, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 788, American Legion Post 727 and Catholic Workman.
Joe enjoyed fishing.
