Joseph A. Klein, 91, of Manchester, died Tuesday, March 25, 2014, at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids. Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 1, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Manchester, by the Rev. Joseph Schneider. Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday, March 31, at the Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Manchester, with a 3 p.m. Scripture service. Additional visitation will be one hour before services Tuesday at the church. Burial will be in St. Mary Catholic Cemetery, Manchester.
Joe was born March 14, 1923, in Raeville, Neb., the son of Frank and Mary (Krogman) Klein. On Nov. 28, 1944, Joe was united in marriage to Viola Moorman at the St. Mary Catholic Church. The couple farmed near Dundee for 42 years, before moving to Manchester in 1989. They were married for 66 years, before Viola's death in March 2010. Joe was a member of St. Mary's Parish for over 70 years.
Joe enjoyed farming all of his life. He enjoyed gardening and growing flowers. Joe enjoyed sports, especially the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Cubs. He loved visiting with neighbors and friends, going to the senior center and Hardee's for coffee and spending time with his family and grandchildren.
Joe is survived by five children, Dennis (JoAnn) Klein of Hiawatha, Diann (Thomas) Hayes of Lamont, Stephen (Debbie) Klein of West Branch, Sue (Dan) Lynch of Farley and Jon (Mick) Klein of Dundee; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Rosemary Klein.
Joe was preceded in death by his wife, Viola; his parents, Frank and Mary Klein; one grandson, Derek Bauer; his sisters, Helen, Hilda, Millie and Vera; and brothers, Richard, Cletus and Francis.
The family would like to thank the Regional Medical Center in Manchester, St. Luke's Hospital and Joe's many friends and neighbors.
