Joseph M. Harb, 78, died Wednesday, April 5, 2017, at Oaknoll Retirement Residence.
Joseph Marshall Harb was born Dec. 20, 1938, in Oakland, Calif., but was raised in Atlanta, Ga. He graduated from Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, receiving his B.S. in biology, and then went on to earn his M.S. in cell biology and Ph.D. in electronmicroscopy at Tulane University in New Orleans. During his long career, he served as director of Diagnostic EM Services at the Veterans Administration Medical Center/Wayne State Medical School in Detroit, Mich., and the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, Wis. He also was a scientific adviser for training in biomedical research to the World Health Organization.
His family includes his wife of 45 years, Jacquelyn; sister, Martha Harb Umberger; his twin brother, David Harb; and many family members living in Atlanta and New Orleans.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Peggy Susebee.
Joe's family wishes to offer their most sincere thanks for his excellent care and compassion from Dr. Margo Schilling through University of Iowa Family Medicine, Iowa City Hospice, and the staff of Oaknoll Retirement Residence – Short Care Unit.
No local services are planned. A celebration of his life for the family will be held in Atlanta at a later date.
