Joseph D. Boyer, 83, of Floris, died at 12:12 a.m. Tuesday, June 14, 2016, at Hospice House in Ottumwa.
He was born Nov. 16, 1932, in Ottumwa, to Errett and Esther Marie Reeve Boyer. He married Georgina Hynick on Aug. 26, 1956, at Munterville Lutheran Church. She preceded him in death on July 15, 2007.
Joe was a 1951 graduate of Ottumwa High School and had attended the Iowa Success School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served in the Far East and Korean conflict.
He was a member of First Lutheran Church and a past member of Kiwanis. He influenced many young workers and enjoyed gardening.
Surviving are his children, Becky (Dean) Paulson of Anamosa, Cindy (Lee) Johns of Ottumwa, Matt (Jan) Boyer of Champlin, Minn., and Todd (Jonita) Boyer of Eddyville; 15 grandchildren, Jim (Sara) Bauer, Joe (Meredith) Johns, Jim (Raegan) Johns, Dakota Boyer, Dimitri Boyer, Dylan Boyer, Drake Boyer, Heather (Toby) Heiken, Rachael Bauer, Amanda Boyer, Andrea (Brett) Pearson, Shelby (Nathan) Hinton, Harlie Jo Boyer, Haegen Boyer and Isabelle Boyer; two step-grandchildren, Clayton (Ashley) Paulson and Keith (Ashley) Paulson; 16 great-grandchildren; siblings, Gene (Marie) Boyer, Marilyn Barnes, Arlette (Wayne) Quick, Joann (John) McCoy, Eunice (George) Osing, David (Sharon) Boyer, Linda Kay Flanders and Wayne (Nancy) Boyer; and special friend, Carolyn Jones.
He was preceded in death by a son, Jeff Boyer; a great-grandson, Mason Bauer; and a sister, Laveta Thompson.
Funeral services will be at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at First Lutheran Church in Ottumwa with the Rev. Mark Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery. Visitation begins at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Reece Funeral Home in Ottumwa with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Iowa Chapter, 8033 University Ave. Suite A, Des Moines, IA 50325; Hospice serving Davis and Wapello counties, 927 Pennsylvania Ave., Ottumwa, IA 52501; or to the donor's choice.
