Joseph “Joe” Bowman, 78, passed away unexpectedly on July 21, 2024, in his home in Santee, California, of natural causes.
A committal service for the family was held at St. Joseph Cemetery.
Joe was born on February 9, 1946, in Iowa City, Iowa to Lawrence E. “Larry” and Ruth Anne (McLaughlin) Bowman. He grew up on the family farm north of Tiffin and attended Madison #5 country school. Joe graduated from Regina High School in Iowa City in 1964 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy (1966 – 1971) He was assigned to the USS Chevalier in San Diego, California, and finished in the U.S. Navy Reserves. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Viet Nam Service Medal. After a career with a large printing operation in the San Diego area, he decided to continue to enjoy the weather of southern California and retired to the waters of California and Arizona where he immersed himself in his passion – fishing, while remaining a faithful Hawkeye!
His family includes his four siblings Judy (Bill) Stebral, Hills, Iowa, Jeri Gosselin, Sugar Grove, Illinois, Jeffrey Bowman, Newnan, Georgia, and Jennifer (Steve) Zwack, Waterloo, Iowa; nieces and nephews, Greg, Kevin (Jenny) Stebral, Tim (Michelle) Stebral, Joe (Lynn) Gosselin, Kit (Michael) Patterson, Ben Gosselin, Eddie Gosselin, Nora (Joe) Wenzel; Wesley, Ashley, Lindsey (Tymon Highsmith), and Jordan Bowman; Luke (Sena), Meredith, John, Aaron and Gracie Zwack; Great nieces and nephews, Cameron, Karlee, Dr. Hannah (Clayton) Zeller, and Mallory Stebral, Ashton Catlett; Eleanor, Lucy and Freddie Gosselin, Clara and Mimi Patterson, Howie and Jane Wenzel, Cason and McKenzie Highsmith, Carleigh Bowman, and Landon Zwack.
He was preceded in death by his parents Lawrence and Ruth Anne (McLaughlin) Bowman, Grandparents Joseph Edward “Ed” and Margaret (Pohler) Bowman, Eugene and Beatrice (Gavin) McLaughlin, brother-in-law Gerry Gosselin, great-niece and great nephew Greta and Oscar Gosselin.
