Jose A. Aquino, 53, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away Thursday, Feb.10, 2022, at UnityPoint-St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids. The family will greet friends and family from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 18, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Cedar Rapids. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 19, at the funeral home. Pastor Gloria Villatoro will officiate. A livestream of the funeral service may be accessed on the funeral home website tribute page for Jose, under "photos and videos," starting at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 19.
Jose was born Dec. 25, 1968, in El Salvador, the son of Rafael Alberto Hernandez and Maria Esther Aquino. He graduated from Manual Arts High School in Los Angeles, Calif. In the fall of 1995, Jose was united in marriage to Maria Magdalena Castro in Iowa City, Iowa. He worked at Whirlpool, IAC, Centro Inc. and, most recently, at PMX as a welder/machine operator.
Jose enjoyed watching sports and especially loved to play soccer. He was a jokester with a unique sense of humor. Jose was known for his intriguing conversations that could engage friends for hours. He was a man of deep faith that loved to share the word of God. Jose loved his grandson and was like a big teddy bear when he was around little Mateo. Jose will be deeply missed by those who loved him.
Survivors include his wife, Magda Castro of Cedar Rapids; children, Joseph (Alejandra) Aquino of Iowa City and Kim (Austin) Hoffon of North Liberty; grandson, Mateo Hoffon; mother-in-law, Juanita Castro of Cedar Rapids; siblings, Blanca Hernandez, America Hernandez, Oti (Francisco Garcia) Hernandez, Maira Aquino, Cecilia (Lito) Rivas, Antonio (Isabel) Aquino and Martin Aquino, all of Los Angeles, and Isabel Vivas of Fairfax, Va.; as well as many nieces and nephews; and his special dog companion, Cookie.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Julio, Rafael and Roberto Hernandez; and nephews, Carlos Baraona, Adam Membreno and Salvador Hernandez.
