Jones, Hilda
Hilda Jones, 91, of Marion, formerly of Delhi, died Monday, Sept. 13, 2010, at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids. Funeral services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Delhi United Methodist Church by the Rev. Lorraine Hartman. Visitation: 4:30 to 8 p.m. today at the Clifton-Murdoch Funeral Home in Earlville, and one hour before services Thursdays at the church. Burial: Evergreen Cemetery, Delhi.
Hilda was born August 6, 1919, in Delhi, the daughter of Thomas and Hilda (Jakelin) Simons. She graduated in 1936 from Delhi Consolidated School and worked on the family farm. On May 24, 1939, Hilda was united in marriage to Forrest “Buster” Jones at the Delhi Methodist Parsonage. She was employed at the Box Factory in Manchester during World War II, while Buster was serving overseas in the Pacific Theater and for over 30 years at Rockwell Collins in Cedar Rapids, retiring in 1982. Hilda and Buster moved to Marion, Iowa, in 1966.
Hilda was a past member of the Delhi United Methodist Women, a member of the Business Women's Association of Cedar Rapids, Rockwell Collins Retirees and several Pinochle Card Clubs in Marion and Cedar Rapids. She was a collector of cardinals, a quilter and loved to read books and do crossword puzzles. Hilda enjoyed sports, especially her beloved St. Louis Cardinals.
Hilda is survived by one son, Michael “Mick” (Sharon) Jones; one son-in-law, Frank Evans; two grandchildren, Kyle (Oijai) Gaddie and Michele (Bruce) Johnson; five great-grandchildren, Ashley (Brian) Popejoy, Austin (Autumn) Baker, Hailey Baker, Kial Johnson and Bennett Gaddie; a soon-to-be great-great-grandson, Jackson Popejoy; two sisters, Mary McElmeel and Jane Mautino; and one sister-in-law, Betty Pettlon.
Hilda was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Hilda Simons; her husband, Buster Jones; one daughter, Marsha Evans; a grandson, Kevin Jones; a great-granddaughter, Elyse Baker; siblings, Jack (Lila) Simons, Alice (Shirley) Keith, Dorothy (Raymond) Gentz, Grace (Walter) Nieman, Edna Peterman and Margaret (Francis) Stramer; and in-laws, Elmer McElmeel, Charles Mautino and Gilbert Pettlon.
