He was born Nov. 18, 1955, in Aledo, Ill., to Herbert F. and Mildred E. Hicks Peterson. He resided in Aledo in his earlier years, moving to Oska-loosa, Iowa, in the late 1960s. He graduated from Oskaloosa High School in 1973.
He married Cindy Hibler on March 6, 1976. They later divorced. Then on Aug. 12, 2006, he married his longtime best friend, Lindy Paul, in the chapel on the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines.
He started helping on the farm at a young age for John VanGendren, Unionville, Mo. He later worked with his family, Sylvan and Rachel VeVerka, on their rural Montezuma farm. Following high school, he worked for Manatt's on the road crew, later becoming tire shop manager in Brooklyn. At the time of his death, he was an account consultant manager for Allied Oil and Supply Inc. in Des Moines. He covered accounts statewide. He was currently ranked third top consultant for the entire company and first in his district, a distinction he worked hard to achieve and always strived to better himself. He continued to work up until his illness would not allow him to travel any longer. His last working day was Aug. 8, 2014.
Jon loved to attend the Iowa State Fair every year and was at the fair this year on two occasions. He was a member of the Fair's Blue Ribbon Foundation for several years and enjoyed camping with friends from various parts of the state. He loved to golf, snow ski in Colorado, participate in the Pony Express, Figure 8 races, pool and dancing.
He will be remembered for his humor, quick wit and caring for others. He loved to spend time with his family and friends, especially enjoying his grandsons.
He is survived by his wife, Lindy, of Montezuma; daughter, Amy (Eric) Stout of Oskaloosa; son, Michael J. Peterson of Deep River; three grandsons, Dawson Davis, Hunter Davis and Scott Stout; two sisters, Jan Feehan and Joanne Day, both of Oskaloosa; and many nieces and nephews, as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert Peterson and Mildred Hicks Peterson; his grandparents, Albert John and Edith Peterson of Alexis, Ill., and John and Emma Hicks of Montezuma, Iowa; brothers-in-law, Allen Feehan and James G. Day; niece. uncles. aunts and cousins.
