Jon Joseph Freesmeier, 52, of Cedar Rapids, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on January 20, 2024. A visitation will be held at 9:00 a.m., Friday, January 26 until the time of the funeral mass, 11:00 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, Hiawatha. A private burial at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery will be held at a later date.
Jon was born November 2, 1971, in Ft. Madison, Iowa, to Delmar and Cheryl (Mullahy) Freesmeier. He attended Marquette High School in West Point, IA. He graduated from the University of Iowa with honors in mechanical engineering in 1995 and earned his master’s degree in engineering in 1997. Jon worked for TRW Automotive, Maytag, and Collins Aerospace. He was a skilled engineer and developed nine patents over his career, from airbags to refrigerators to cockpit displays.
Jon married Michele McDermott on May 22, 1999. They started their life together in Arizona, where Nathan was born in January 2002. They eventually moved back to Iowa and Claire was born in February 2005. Their family enjoyed traveling and they took frequent trips together. Jon’s hobbies included golfing, flying his drone, and photography. He was an excellent cook and gardener. Jon was known for his kindness, intelligence, humility, and selflessness.
Jon is survived by his wife, Michele; children, Nathan and Claire; parents, Delmar and Cheryl Freesmeier; sister, Maria (Micheal) Beamer, mother-in-law, Maureen McDermott; brothers-in-law, Jason (Dede) McDermott, Aaron McDermott; sister-in-law, Kristi (Gerry Notara) McDermott; nieces and nephews, William Beamer, Sam, Rachel, Rebecca, and Anna McDermott. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, James and Alice Mullahy and Louis and Della Freesmeier; father-in-law, Ken McDermott, and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
