Johnson, Phyllis Eileen
Phyllis Eileen Johnson, 81, passed on Sunday, July 8, 2012, in her Cedar Rapids home. Her final days were spent surrounded by family and friends praying for her comfort and peace. Lil Phyl was sharing stories and spreading cheer right up until the very end. She will be missed more than words can convey.
Born in Creston, Iowa, on April 25, 1931, her arrival thrilled parents Edward and Marie Pierce. Following three boys (Louis, Lowell and Art), she was a cherished daughter who completed the family. Her dad worked for the railroad and was transferred through her childhood. Phyllis lived in Creston, Clinton, Pacific Junction and Ottumwa. She graduated OHS Class of 1949.
Phyllis married Art Johnson on July 3, 1962, and together they blended two families into one. They enjoyed 40 years together before Art's passing and this July she celebrated their 50th anniversary in her heart.
Phyllis was a homemaker and Art's partner in life. When the John Morrell plant closed, they transferred to St. Paul, Minn., returning to Ottumwa upon retirement. You could always count on them to be puttering in the yard, taking time for a chat with a neighbor, friend, kid or grandkid. When she lost Art, it was time for a change. Ten years ago, Phyllis moved to Cedar Rapids to live with her daughter and grandchildren. Her gentle nature won over the family cat, Beau, and he was her constant companion. Together they followed the Minnesota Vikings, Chicago Cubs and Tiger Woods.
Surviving children are Nancy (Roy) Roberts and Doug Cassatt of Ottumwa, Cindy (Mike) Keyes of California, Scott (Jaime Cantu) Cassatt of Minnesota, Tony (Carla) Johnson of Bettendorf and Valerie (Travis Pike) Anderson of Cedar Rapids.
Her legacy continues through nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and six great-great grandchildren.
Phyllis mourned the passing of her husband Art; infant daughter, Kerry Lynne; son, Terry Cassatt; and grandson, Troy Wardlow.
A service of remembrance will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, July 15, at Shrine of Memories, Memorial Lawn Cemetery, North Court Road and Highway 63 in Ottumwa.
