Johnson, Marietta Helene Maurer
Marietta Helene Maurer Johnson, 88, of Manchester, died March 2, 2011, at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 5, at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Manchester by the Rev. David Weber. Visitation: 3 to 7 p.m. today at Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Manchester. Additional visitation: one hour before services at the church on Saturday. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Manchester.
Marietta was born Feb. 25, 1923, the daughter of Martin and Etta (Nieman) Maurer, at the parental home northeast of Manchester. She was confirmed June 14, 1936, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Delaware, Iowa. Marietta attended rural school and graduated from Manchester High School in 1940. After graduation, she was an office secretary for six years at Schultz Brothers store in Manchester. On Aug. 18, 1946, Marietta was united in marriage to Bengt E. Johnson at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Delaware. The couple farmed all of their life on their farm north of Manchester. Retiring in 1985, they moved to Manchester and in March 2008, moved to the Meadows Assisted Living.
Marietta was a charter member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Manchester, where she taught Sunday school and held various offices in Our Savior Mission Guild. She was a member of Lend-A-Hand Club and did volunteer work at the school and the Good Neighbor Home. Marietta enjoyed gardening and caring for her flowers.
Marietta is survived by her husband, Ben Johnson of Manchester; a brother-in-law, Raymond Norduft, and a sister-in-law, Bessie Maurer, both of Manchester; and many nieces and nephews.
Marietta was preceded in death by her parents, Martin and Etta Maurer; three brothers, Nieman, Evlon and Muriel Maurer; two sisters, Elma Platt and Marjorie Nodurft; one brother-in-law, Homer Platt; and two sisters-in-law, Marion Maurer and Gladys Maurer.
