Johnson, Betty Mae
MECHANICSVILLE - Betty Mae Johnson, 89, a resident of Prairie Hills, Tipton, formerly of Mechanicsville, passed away Thursday, Sept. 23, 2010, in Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, after a short illness. Betty's visitation and viewing will be from 1 until 3 p.m. Sunday at Morgan Funeral and Cremation Choices, Mount Vernon Chapel. Betty's funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at the chapel by Celebrant Mary Morgan. Betty is to be buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Mechanicsville, after a light lunch.
Survivors include Colleen (Chuck) Svoboda, Charles (Betty Jean) Johnson, Carla (David) Barnhart and Cletus (Alberta) Johnson, all of Mechanicsville; grandchildren, Terri Jo Lawless, Kellie (Tom) Steffenson, Vance Zimmer, Tina (Bob) Hanks, Brad Barnhart, Justin Mullan, John Bemer, Marc (Erica Jacobs) Barnhart and Catrina Johnson; great-grandchildren, Brooke Zimmer, Tate and Trey Steffenson, Aaron Zimmer, Tanner Mullan, Taylor Ciha, Trent and Trevor Hanks and Luke Lawless, Bryce and Natalie Bemer and Allison and Kennedy Barnhart. Also surviving are a great-great-grandson, Charlie Bloom; sister, Allene (Louis) Turner, Cedar Rapids; and many nieces and nephews.
Betty Mae was preceded in death by her husband, Ervin, who died in 1975; parents, George and Bessie Robinson Fisher; and siblings, Bertha Reid, Eldora Driscoll, Alice Driscoll, Mary Fisher, Marge Varva and Georgie Fisher. Also preceding Betty was her son-in-law, John Bemer; grandson, Mitch Mullan; and grandson-in-law, David Lawless.
Betty was born on the Fisher family near Mechanicsville on April 12, 1921, and graduated from Mechanicsville High School in 1940. She married Ervin Johnson of Bloomfield on Jan. 7, 1946, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Mechanicsville, where she was a member. Betty and her husband farmed near Mechanicsville and had a large dairy herd.
Betty was a devoted and loving mother. She was also a homebody. She enjoyed making afghans, giving them to her special friends and making lap robes for nursing homes. She resided the past five years at Prairie Hills, Tipton, where she made many friends with the residents and staff.
She will be missed by all.
Memorials may be donated to Mechanicsville Fire & Ambulance Volunteers or the Mechanicsville Parks & Recreational Board.
